Students and Staff at Kenya Medical Training Institute (Thika Campus) are in shock after one of their students died after drowning at a swimming pool at Golden Palm Hotel.
The student (21 years) was among three other colleagues from the institution who had attended a swimming expedition hosted at the hotel.
According to Murang’a South DCIO, police are investigating the incident to determine if the student drowned or if his death was pre-determined.
“We are at are conducting investigations to establish the cause of the death of the student who was in his third year at KMTC college,” the police boss said.
Reports close to the detectives indicate that the student did not know how to swim despite his family emphasizing that their boy knew how to swim and had indeed swam in various competitions.
The deceased’s uncle, Stephen Gathemba, said the family had requested for a repeat of the postmortem since they were not fully involved when the first autopsy was conducted.
“We are not satisfied with the results of the first autopsy report. That’s why we want it repeated, to know and understand how our kin drowned in a swimming pool yet he know how to swim,” Gathemba told the Nation.
